Character
It is imperative to have an understanding of your personal values and a sense of who you are in order to approach a situation of unethical behavior and make the decision to do something about it.  Ethics is not just following a set of rules, it is about knowing when to stand up and demonstrate you are a person of moral character.

Courage
It takes courage to stand up for what is right and not simply walk away from an unethical situation.  It takes courage to face uncertainty, difficulty and pain without having fear overcome you. Possessing the conviction to do what is right, regardless of personal sacrifice, is desperately needed in today’s society.

Bystander Intervention
The bystander effect is a scary social psychological phenomenon in the world today.  It refers to situations when no one offers help to a person or victim in need.  During unethical or unsafe circumstances, the probability of help is inversely related to the number of bystanders.

If your teen was at a party and saw someone making sexual advances toward a student who was drunk, would he/she intervene?

What if your child was walking down Main Street and a stranger fell down on the sidewalk and starting seizing? What would your child do? What should he/she do?

If your son or daughter was passed out at a party, would you want someone to intervene?

JLS Empowerment feels bystander intervention is an essential skill to teach young adults.  Teaching ways to overcome the barriers associated with intervening is a priority in the JLSE education.  Fear, peer pressure, embarrassment are obstacles JLSE workshops help to overcome.
